Paylines and Ways to Win in Online Slots

Paylines and ways-to-win systems describe how symbols form a winning pattern. Learn where to find the rules and what the counts leave out.

Fixed paylines

A payline is a pattern of symbol positions across the reels. In a fixed-payline game, each round evaluates the displayed lines, often from left to right. A paytable shows the patterns that pay and the amount for a winning combination. The line can zigzag, so matching symbols on the same horizontal row are not always required.

Some games let a player select the number of active lines, while others keep every line active. The total stake may depend on the stake per line multiplied by the number of active lines.

Ways to win and other patterns

Ways-to-win games typically count matching symbols on adjacent reels, often starting at the leftmost reel, without requiring them to appear on a single fixed line. A 5-reel game with three positions on each reel might advertise up to 243 ways, but the exact rules depend on the title. Cluster pays use adjacent groups of symbols, and cascading games may remove a winning group before new symbols appear.

More listed patterns do not automatically mean better odds. What matters is the rules for each result, the payout values, game configuration and RTP.

Read the game information

Check whether a win must begin on a particular reel, how wilds substitute, whether scatters can pay anywhere and how the stake is calculated. Read the paytable for the exact version, including any bonus round rules. If a rule is unclear, do not rely on a demonstration or marketing image to fill in the gap.

Find the total stake behind the line control

In a game that allows line selection, total stake may be the stake per active line multiplied by the number of lines. For example, 20 active lines at NZ$0.10 each produce a NZ$2 total stake for that spin. A display saying “10 cents per line” can therefore describe a larger total wager. Other titles set one total stake and keep every line active, so check the controls and confirmation screen.

Ways-to-win games may use one total stake across all configured ways instead of a selectable stake per line. A headline such as “243 ways” describes eligible symbol paths under that title's rules; it does not mean a 243-in-1 chance of winning or a higher return by itself.

How the game counts a winning pattern

Pattern How a win is identified What to check
Fixed payline Symbols match along a defined path across reels. Line direction, active lines and minimum matching symbols.
Ways to win Matching symbols appear on adjacent reels in eligible positions. Which reels must connect and whether order matters.
Cluster pay A required group of adjacent matching symbols appears. Minimum cluster size and whether diagonals count.
Cascade A winning group is removed and new symbols may fall. How many cascades are allowed and how each is paid.

A “ways” count tells you how the game recognizes a pattern. Use RTP and the paytable to compare theoretical return and prizes.

Wilds and scatters follow game-specific rules

Slot reels with highlighted horizontal and diagonal paylines

A wild may substitute for some symbols but not others, and a scatter may pay regardless of line position. Some games exclude wilds from a combination, restrict them to selected reels or change their role during a bonus round. Open the paytable for this version; another slot may use wilds and scatters differently.

Check whether a displayed win is multiplied by the stake per line, total bet or a separate feature multiplier. Confirm whether a bonus trigger requires a minimum stake and whether a feature has its own paytable. A demo shows how the controls work. Confirm the real-money game's paytable separately. Save the rule screen if a settlement depends on how a pattern was evaluated.

When matching symbols do not produce a payout

A symbol can look like a match and still fail to pay. A fixed line may need to start at the leftmost reel; matching symbols on another row may not count unless the paytable shows that path. In a ways game, symbols usually need to connect on adjacent reels. A scatter may follow a separate rule.

When a result surprises you, open the paytable and trace the positions the game evaluated. Check the active line count and total stake from that exact round. The history screen can show the stake and payout, while the rule panel explains why the pattern did or did not qualify.
